The Participle And its Types with Examples

Hello friends ! Today we are going to study about The Participle And its Types with Examples, an important topic of grammar. In competitive exams, many types of questions are asked about participle. Therefore, you must have good knowledge of participle. So let us know what is the participle and how to use in a sentence:

What is The Participle :

Friends! To understand participle better first, let us look at some examples :

01.I saw Ram singing a song.
02.Taking his book, He started to read a lesson.
  • On reading carefully you find that in the first sentence, the word singing acts like an adjective. This indicates the Specialty of Ram (Noun).
  • Likewise, in the second sentence, the word Taking acts like an adjective. This indicates the Specialty
  • of He (Pronoun).

Such words are called verb adjective or participle. A Participle serves both as a verb and an adjective. That is, it is a little verb and a little adjective.

In this way, we can say that when a verb acts as an adjective, that is, to reveal the attribute of a noun or pronoun, such a verb adjective is called Participle.

Types of the Participle :

Friends! There are three types of participle which are as follows :

  • Present Participle
  • Past Participle
  • Perfect Participle

The Present Participle :

This Participle is formed by adding ing with the first form of the verb. This verb + ing acts as an adjective and attributes its Object (noun / pronoun) in the sentence. Such verb adjective is present participle.

Let’s take an example to understand :

01.He listened Radha speaking English.
02.The smiling child called his Mother.
  • In sentence-1, Speaking is a Present Participle which is formed by adding ing to the verb speak. This verb speaking acts as an adjective and indicates Specialty of Radha.
  • Similarly, in sentence-2, Smiling is also a Present Participle which is formed by adding ing to verb smile. It is like an adjective telling the child‘s Specialty.

The Past Participle :

This Participle is formed by the third form of the verb. This 3rd form of the verb makes sense of a completed task and acts as an adjective.

It attributes object (noun / pronoun) in a sentence. Such verb adjective is past participle.

Let’s take an example to understand :

01.She wears a washed dress.
02.My mother sings a newly released song.
  • In sentence-1, Washed is a Past Participle which is the third form of the verb wash. It acts as an adjective and tells the feature of the dress.
  • Similarly, in sentence-2, released is also a Past Participle which is the third form of the verb release. It is like an adjective describing the feature of the song (object).

The Perfect Participle :

Friends! This participle is a mixed form of present and past participle meaning that it has both the use of present participle like ing and 3rd form like past participle. This participle makes sense of the action that was completed a long time ago.

Let me tell you that it is formed by having the word before the past participle. If the sentence is in passive voice, it is formed by having been before the past participle.

It also states the attribute of object (noun / pronoun) in the sentence. Such verb adjective is perfect participle.

Active VoiceHaving+ 3rd Form of the verb
Passive VoiceHaving been + 3rd Form of the verb

Let’s take an example to understand :

01.Having cooked food, she washed clothes.
02.Having been finished his homework, I was played cricket.
  • In sentence-1, Having cooked is a Perfect Participle. It is formed by putting the first Having before the third form of the verb Cook. It indicates Specialty of she as an adjective.
  • Similarly, in sentence-2, having been finished is also a Perfect Participle. It is formed by putting the first Having been before the third form of the verb finish. Because this sentence is in passive voice. Hence, having been also used after having. This attributes I as an adjective.

Thus friends! Now you must have understood what is participle and what are these types? And how to use in a sentence. Now we understand some important rules of participle.

Some Important Rules :

Rule : 1.

Friends! Participle is a form of the verb that describes a noun or pronoun. Therefore, it is important to be careful in its use. Many times its wrong usage changes the entire meaning of the sentence.

Participle should always be used with a noun or pronoun. To understand this better, we take an example :

  • I saw a Monkey riding on a horse.

In this sentence, riding is present participle and it shows the characteristic of Monkey. But if this sentence is written in this way, then the meaning of this sentence becomes meaningless :

  • Riding on a horse, I saw a Monkey.

This sentence means that I saw the monkey while I was riding a horse. Here you have to note that in this sentence Riding on a horse is a participle phrase. It does not have a subject and in this case its verb also considers the main subject “I“.

Rule : 2.

Friends, there are also some verbs after which only the object (noun / pronoun) + present participle is used. like :

seewatchcatch
findfeelhear
keepleavestart
wantobservenotice

For Example :

He saw her + reading a lesson.
I found him+ writing a letter.
They left us + watching a Movie.
Ram caught her + making a noise

so friends ! Now you must have understood using participle well. We have explained you The Participle And its Types with Examples in very easy way.
