He is the villain (antagonist) of this novel. He is a slender and bookish looking entomologist.

The story of the novel begins with Holmes’ office at 221b Baker Street in London, where Sherlock Holmes was taking drugs. He was giving himself injections of cocaine. His addiction to drugs had increased so much that he used to take drugs thrice a day. Then his friend and assistant Dr. Watson arrives.
He wants to break Holmes’ drug addiction. He tries to stop Holmes and explains why he is risking his intellectual powers by getting drunk. Holmes said that there is no such thing man, just getting drunk helps him to think.
Let us tell you that Holmes is a famous fictional detective in this novel and Watson is his assistant, who tells us the detective adventures of Holmes. Just say that Watson is the narrator of this novel. Holmes is a very smart and intelligent detective. He says that “I can not live without brainwork.” Meaning he cannot live without running his mind.

उपन्यास की कहानी लंदन में, 221b बेकर स्ट्रीट में, होम्स के कार्यालय से शुरू होती है, जहाँ Sherlock Holmes ड्रग्स ले रहा था। वह खुद को कोकीन के इंजेक्शन दे रहा था। उसकी ड्रग्स की लत इतनी बढ़ गयी थी कि वह दिन में तीन-तीन बार ड्रग्स लिया करता था। तभी उसका दोस्त और असिस्टेंट Dr. Watson आता है।
वह होम्स की ड्रग्स की लत को छुड़ाना चाहता है। उसने होम्स को रोकने की कोशिश की और कहा कि वह क्यों नशा करके अपने Intellectual Powers को खतरे में डाल रहा है। होम्स ने कहा कि ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं है यार, बस नशा करने से उसे सोचने में मदद मिलती है।

The name of this beautiful girl is Mary Morstan. She started saying that actually Sir, my father Captain Morstan was an officer in the British Army. Many years ago today, in 1878, when I was only 17 years old and studying at a boarding school in Scotland, my father was about to come home. He told me through a telegram that he was going to come home on vacation.
He had invited me to a hotel to meet him. When I reached the hotel to meet my father, I was told by the hoteliers that he had left the hotel. Sir, after that day I could never meet him again.
She further tells that Sir, when my father suddenly disappeared six years ago, an advertisement was published in the newspaper. In this advertisement someone asked for my address. Hearing this, Holmes is a little surprised.
Mary Morstan told that I gave my address in response to this ads. And since then there is someone who has started sending me big, soft, shiny pearls in a box. And I have been getting this precious pearl every year on the same date.

इस खूबसूरत सी लड़की का नाम Mary Morstan है। वो कहने लगी कि दरअसल सर, मेरे पिताजी Captain Morstan ब्रिटिश आर्मी में एक ऑफिसर थे। आज से कई वर्ष पूर्व 1878 में, जब मैं महज 17 साल की थी और स्कॉटलैंड के एक बोर्डिंग स्कूल में पढ़ रही थी, उस वक़्त मेरे पिताजी घर आने वाले थे। उन्होंने एक टेलीग्राम से मुझे बताया था कि वो छुटियाँ लेकर घर आने वाले है।
उन्होंने मुझे मिलने के लिये एक होटल में बुलाया था। जब मैं पिताजी से मिलने होटल पहुंची तो मुझे होटल वालो ने बताया कि वो तो होटल से निकल चुके है। सर, उस दिन के बाद में उनसे फिर कभी मिल ही नहीं पायी।
आगे वो बताती है कि सर, आज से छः साल पहले जब मेरे पिताजी अचानक से गायब हो गये थे, तब Newspaper में एक Advertisement छपी थी। इस Advertisement में किसी ने मेरा एड्रेस पूछा था। ये सुनकर होम्स थोड़ा हैरान हो जाता है।
Mary Morstan ने बताया कि मैंने उस Ads के जवाब में अपना एड्रेस बता दिया। और तब से कोई तो है, जिसने मुझे एक बॉक्स में बंद बड़े-बड़े, मुलायम, चमकीले मोती भेजना शुरू कर दिया है। और ये कीमती मोती मुझे हर साल उसी तारीख पर मिलता आ रहा है।

But this year something different happened. This time I also got a note with that pearl. The girl showed the note to Holmes, and Holmes read the note that read, “See us at 7 o’clock this evening outside the Lyceum Theatre on the left, under the third pillar.
