What is Present Perfect Continuous Tense
Present Perfect Continuous Tense : In this Tense, An action starts at some time and is completed partially every day, it makes sense to continue in the coming time. In other words, when an Action starts in the past and continues till now, it is Present Perfect Continuous Tense.
Friends! Present Perfect means you know – the completion of action and Present Continuous means the continuation of action. And Present Perfect Continuous Tense is a mixture of both these tenses, meaning that the action is partially completed and continues even further.
Let us understand by some examples :
Singular | Plural |
---|---|
Ram has been finishing Home Work since morning. | We have been purchasing books since evening. |
She has been living in Jaipur for two years. | They have been eating food for 2 hours. |
He has been writing a letter since 10’O Clock. | I have been singing a song since 1990. |
When you read these examples carefully then you must be understanding some things :
- You noticed that one thing is common in these sentences that the “Ist form of the Main Verb with ing” after the Helping Verb is being used in all the sentences.
- And two types of helping verb — “has been /have been” is being used in these Sentences.
- At the end of the sentence, “since / for” is also being used in these Sentences.
When you pay attention to these three points, you must understand one thing, that Present Perfect Continuous Tense uses the helping verb has been / have been and the Ist form of the verb with “ing“. To show period or point of time, “since /for” is also used in it. Let us now try to understand all these things well.
Important Rules of Present Perfect Continuous Tense :
To understand the Present Perfect Continuous Tense, first we have to understand some of its rules which are as follows:
- This Tense uses the Helping Verb “has been” with Singular Subject – He, She, It and Single Names and the Helping Verb “have been” with Plural Subjects – I, We, You, They and Plural Names.
- The Ist form of the verb with “ing” is always used in present perfect Continuous tense.
- If there is Negative sentence, then use “not” between the helping verb has been / have been. Not is used after has / have but before been. like : has not been / have not been.
- In Interrogative Sentence, has/have is always applied before the subject and been is used immediately after the subject. We must also put question mark at the end of the sentence.
- If the sentence is Interrogative as well as negative, then the helping verb (has/have) is applied before the subject and “not been” is used immediately after the subject.
- There is also a sense of time in Present Perfect Continuous Tense. So keep in mind that if time is fixed then Since is used for point of time and if time is not fixed (indefinite) then for is used for period of time.
