Passive Voice Rules in Different Types of Sentences
Hello friends ! As We have learned about Active Passive Voice and Rules of Change of the Voice in the previous notes. Today, we are studying Passive Voice Rules in Different Types of Sentences.
Apart from Tense, there are some such Sentences. We have to take care of certain rules while changing them from Active to Passive Voice. So let us know what rules are applicable for different sentences and how to make Passive Voice from Active Voice with the help of these rules.
Sentences With Modals :
When Modal Auxiliary i.e. Modal Helping Verb is used in a sentence, “Be” is immediately placed after Modal while making the passive voice of such sentences. And the rest of the rules will remain the same as we have told you earlier in notes.

- For modal sentences, we can follow the below structure :
For Active Voice | Subject | + Modal | + Ist Form of the Verb | + Object. |
For Passive Voice | Object | + Modal + be | + IIIrd Form of the Verb | +by + Subject. |

For Example :
Active Voice | Passive Voice |

He can write a letter. | A letter can be written by him. |
She may speak English. | English may be spoken by her. |
I must take this medicine. | This medicine must be taken by me. |
Sachin would play cricket. | Cricket would be played by Sachin. |
Sentences with Infinitive Verb :
- Friends! If infinitive verb (to + Ist Form of the Verb) is used after helping verb (to be – is am are was was had) etc. then, “to be + IIIrd Form of the Verb” is used after helping verb while making passive voice of such sentences. To understand this, you can follow the structure given below :
For Active Voice | Subject | + H.V. + to | + Ist Form of the Verb | + Object. |
For Passive Voice | Object | + H.V. + to be | + IIIrd Form of the Verb | +by + Subject. |
For Example :

He was to drive a car. | A car was to be driven by him. |
She is to sing a song. | A song is to be sung by her. |
I am to read a book. | A book is to be read by me. |
We had to play football. | Football had to be played by us. |
You have to drink milk. | Milk has to be drunk by you. |
They will have to join him in army. | He will have to be joined (by them) in army. |
Sentences with Prepositional Phrases :
- Friends! Some main verbs are always used only with preposition. When changing such sentences into passive voice, let the preposition remain as it is. And the rest of the rules will remain the same. For this, You can follow the structure given below :
For Active Voice | Subject | + H.V. | + M.V. (Tense wise) | + Preposition | + Object. |
For Passive Voice | Object | + H.V. | + IIIrd Form of the Verb | + Preposition | +by + Subject. |

She looks after the house. | The house is looked after by her. |
Imperative Sentences :
To change Imperative Sentence into passive voice, you have to keep in mind the following rules :
Imperative sentences expressing order or command (Positive Sense) :
- If Imperative sentence express order or command in positive sense, then at the beginning of the sentence, Let is used and before the third form of Main Verb, “be” is also used to make passive voice of such Imperative Sentences. you can follow the structure given below :

For Passive Voice | Let | + Object | + be | + IIIrd Form of the Verb | – |

Imperative sentences expressing order or command (Negative Sense) :
- If Imperative sentences express order or command in Negative Sense, then at the beginning of the sentence, Let is used by removing Do and Not is placed either immediately after Let or before the “be + IIIrd Form of the Verb to change it in passive voice. you can follow the structure given below :

OR | Let | + not | + Object | + be | + IIIrd Form of the Verb | – |
For Example :

Do not make a noise. | Let a noise not be made. | Let not a noise be made. |
Do not open the door. | Let the door not be opened. | Let not the door be opened. |
Do not clean the room. | Let the room not be cleaned. | Let not the room be cleaned. |
Imperative sentences expressing request or advice
Such imperative sentences can be made in two ways. Here we are telling you both ways :
Type : 1.
- If Imperative Sentences express prayer / request or advice. then, “Should be” is placed before the IIIrd Form of the Verb. Let us tell you that these types of sentences start with words like Kindly or Please. For this you can follow the structure given below :
For Active Voice | – | Kindly | Please | + Ist Form of the Verb | + Object. |
For Passive Voice | Object | + should be | + IIIrd Form of the Verb | – |
For Example :
Active Voice | Passive Voice |

Kindly take this pill. | This pill should be taken. |
Please help the poor. | The poor should be helped. |
Please bring a glass of water. | A glass of water should be brought. |
Type : 2.
- Friends! while making these sentences passive, you can use “You are requested to” instead of “Kindly or Please“. And the rest of the rules will remain the same. This method is easier and more popular. You can follow the structure given below :
For Active Voice | Kindly / Please | + Ist Form of the Verb | + Object. |
For Passive Voice | You are requested to | + Ist Form of the Verb | + Object. |
For Example :

Sentences with Double Objects :
- Friends! There are some sentences which have two objects. You can use any object while making passive voice for sentences with such double objects. Other changes are according to prior rules. For this, you can use the following structure :
For Active Voice | Subject | + H.V. | + M.V. (Tense wise) | + Object1 | + Object2. |
For Passive Voice | Object1 | + H.V. | + IIIrd Form of the Verb | + Object2 | +by + Subject. |
OR | Object2 | + H.V. | + IIIrd Form of the Verb | + Object1 | +by + Subject. |
For Example :
Active Voice | Passive Voice : Type – I | Passive Voice : Type – II |

He asks me a question. | I am asked a question by him. | A question is asked to me by him. |
The Cow is giving us Milk. | We are being given milk by the cow. | Milk is being given to us by the cow. |
They have told me a story. | I have been told a story (by them). | A story has been told to me (by them). |
