Introduction :
In this sonnet entitled “Let me not to the marriage of true minds – Sonnet 116” Shakespeare speaks of the nature of true love. This Sonnet is addressed to the young man who is supposed to be his patron, the Earl of Southampton – W.H.
Shakespeare says that true love never changes. It always remains firm and constant.
Theme : Constancy of true love
In this sonnet, Shakespeare speaks about the constancy of love. He says that a true love does not change in course of time. It is immortal.
A true love triumphs over all the obstacles and barriers that come in its way. Love is not affected by time. True love is like a star and light house. True and sincere lovers are always ready to make sacrifice for the sake of love.
Subject Matter : True Love
Shakespeare says that True Love is permanent and unchangeable. He is not ready to accept any obstacles in the mingling of two true souls.
No force on Earth can prevent the unity of two sincere hearts. If Love changes because of any Social, Economic or Physical Situations, Then, It is not true love. Love is immortal.

- Impediments : Difficulties – कठिनाईयाँ
- Alters : Changes – बदल जाना
- Bends : Turn away – मोड़ लेना
- Remover : A person who breaks up – नाता तोड़ लेने वाला
The ever fixed mark is the light house which stands in the sea. This light house guides ships. True love is compared to the light house. The constant light of true love prevents us from wandering to wrong paths. True love overcomes all obstacles. it never dies. It remains like a light house or the pole star.
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand’ring bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
There is another similarity between true love and pole star. Pole star guides the sailors. In the same way, True love brings happiness in our life and guides us to a right path. Again, He says that true love never changes.

True love is not a toy in the hands of time. True love is timeless. Time can not affect the course of love. Time can destroy beauty and youth. Physical beauty is short -lived. But, Love is eternal and everlasting.

True love does not change over time. True love is immortal. It remains the same as it was in the beginning. Time is the pruning sickle who cuts everything but time cannot cut or destroy true love.
though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

- Time’s fool : Time hunting – समय का शिकार
- Brief hours and weeks : Time intervals – समय अंतराल
- Edge of Doom : Judgment Day – कयामत
The Poet says that if he is proved wrong in his philosophy of love, He will give up all claims of being called a poet.
He is not a true poet and no man has ever loved truly in this world.
“If this be error and upon me prov’d,
I never writ, nor no man ever lov’d.”

- Upon me proved : If proved wrong – यदि गलत साबित हुआ

Metaphors :
The Poet uses metaphors of light house and the pole star for True love. It stands firm and guides many ships. On other hand Pole Star remains fixed and guides Sailors.
These two Metaphors indicates True Love which is unchangeable and the guide to this world.

The rhyme scheme of this sonnet is ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GG. It is a poem of 14 Lines. The sonnet is called English or Shakespeare Sonnet. It consists three quatrain of four lines and a couplet of two lines.

Challenging attitude of Poet :
Shakespeare challenges the critic to prove that his judgement about true love is incorrect. He says ” This can be proved against me, then I have never written anything and no man’s love has ever been real love.“

Importance of true love :
Poet says that True love guides us in life. The real worth of true love is incalculable. True love ennobles the souls of the lovers. It does not change despite ups and downs in love. True love is immortal.
Conclusion :
Thus, Shakespeare presents his views on true love which is immortal. This is a most loving poem in English Verse. There is none of equal length to compare with it in English language.
